Nannochloropsis is a genus of microscopic, single-celled green microalgae valued for its rapid growth and high nutritional density, particularly its rich content of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA) and proteins. It is widely used as a foundational feed in aquaculture, a sustainable source for biofuels, and a plant-based dietary supplement for humans

  • Benefits: Promotes biodiversity, improves water quality, and provides essential nutrition for corals, clams, sponges, and larvae.

  • Nutritional Profile: High in protein (40-50% dry weight) and EPA (30-40% of total fatty acids), making it ideal for feeding copepods.

  • Usage: Live cultures are generally preferred. A common dosage is roughly 50 ml per 100 liters per day.

  • Administration: It is recommended to turn off protein skimmers for at least one hour during and after feeding, or dose at night.

  • Culturing: Nannochloropsis is easy to grow at home, doubling every 24–48 hours, making it a sustainable, cost-effective food source.

  • Storage: Live phytoplankton should be refrigerated and shaken daily to prevent settling. 

Application Methods:

  • Direct Feeding: Add directly to the tank to feed corals and invertebrates.

  • Zooplankton Culture: Use as a food source for breeding pods, brine shrimp, and rotifers.

  • Nutrient Control: The algae consumes nitrates and phosphates, which are then consumed by filter feeders, removing them from the water column.

Culturing Tips

If you are looking to grow your own, Nannochloropsis is relatively hardy:

  1. Salinity: Maintain between 25–35 ppt (approx. 1.018–1.026 SG).

  2. Light: Requires 12–16 hours of bright light daily.

  3. Aeration: Use gentle, continuous aeration to keep cells suspended and prevent clumping.

  4. Fertilizer: Utilize standard F/2 culture medium to provide necessary nutrients like nitrogen and trace metals.
